In the heart of Castell d’Aro, a sustainable architecture project is breathing life into a forgotten space, transforming it into an oasis of communal dining and nature. In this text, we will explore how the “AFTERCARS” initiative seeks to change the perception of an abandoned industrial area, turning it into a new green and naturalized square that promotes sustainable development.<\/p>\n

<\/i><\/a>Public space as a generator of community identity and unity among people<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Shared meals in public spaces are a fundamental part of Mediterranean culture. Whether enjoying street food during the town’s main festival or gathering around a barbecue on a warm summer day, the act of eating together brings people closer and strengthens community identity. It is in this tradition that “AFTERCARS” draws inspiration for its transformation project.<\/p>\n

<\/i><\/a>Sustainable development project: Public space<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Currently, the land surrounding Castell d’Aro is dominated by asphalt and vehicles. What was originally conceived as a landscaped entrance to the town through the old Via Verde has turned into a barren asphalt field, far removed from its original purpose. However, amidst this desolate landscape, a solitary public barbecue stands as a beacon of socialization on weekends and holidays.<\/p>\n

“AFTERCARS” understands the importance of preserving and enhancing what already functions on the site as a catalyst for change. Instead of demolishing the existing barbecue, it is given new life with a traditional blue tile finish that evokes the nuances of the Mediterranean. An elegant pergola provides shade for the cooks, and a chimney reminiscent of Hansel and Gretel carries the smoke above the trees, signaling lunchtime.<\/p>\n

To promote socialization and collective enjoyment of food, a large, zigzagging, and inclusive table has been designed to accommodate 50 diners. Its shape, inspired by a centipede, harmoniously intertwines with the tree trunks, inviting neighbors to share moments of togetherness and strengthen bonds of friendship in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere under the shade of the trees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
