MNAC Expansion

Rambla MNAC

Finalist proposal in the international competition for the expansion and rehabilitation of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), which envisions a new connection between the Palau Nacional and the Victòria Eugènia Pavilion through a large museum promenade. An architectural gesture that transforms the Montjuïc park into an interior route where art, nature and architecture converge.

The new Museum Rambla crosses the Victòria Eugènia Pavilion like a covered fragment of parkland, and connects underground to the Palau Nacional via inclined elevators and a lifting platform for artworks. This new, gentle and accessible topography weaves together public, exhibition and civic spaces into a continuous cultural landscape.

The project preserves the identity of the pavilion as a grand forest of columns, respecting its heritage character. It introduces large, open spaces bathed in natural light through new skylights and covered courtyards. New access points, from Plaça Carles Buïgas and Passeig Forestier, enhance urban permeability and link the museum to the city.

With a clear and efficient architecture, the proposal ensures sustainability, functionality and beauty. The use of modular structures and passive systems reduces environmental impact, while the reorganized layout allows for a museum that is more open, adaptable and connected to the public.
