Renovation Montjuïc Castle interiors – Ongoing

Renovation Montjuïc Castle interiors, Barcelona

The renovation project for the Guard Corps and Military barracks in Montjuïc Castle seeks to adapt these interior spaces of the castle now unused to shelter exhibitions and dance performances with the utmost respect for the original architecture, declared Cultural Asset of National Interest and, giving sustainability the importance it deserves, with the minimum material resources to achieve it.

The main concept of the project is based on the preservation of historical heritage and the search for a harmonious coexistence between the old and the contemporary, which in a desire to dematerialize, adopts the white color.

To achieve a sustainable and respectful renovation with the heritage, we avoid the demolition of the historical wall finishes, which remain seen or protected. Thus, the project is solved with a wooden floor platform that hides the technical installations below and allows the recognition of the vault unaltered.

Inspired by Vauban’s architecture, whose angular shape was determined by defensive needs, we propose furniture that adapts to the different layouts of the vaults and the new uses for exhibition and dance space. These pieces of furniture, mobile and flexible, are conceived as small architectures that will be located freely on the platform. Its layout can be easily modified according to the needs of each event or exhibition.

Regarding lighting, a specific and strategic approach will be used to highlight the architectural details and the works of art on display, avoiding disturbing the integrity of the architectural space.
